New Adventure in Music City

dinner_bfore_leaving4Nashville

Had a lovely goodbye-see-you-later dinner with my family last night. ...My mom and dad are the best parents I could ask for. I'm so thankful for their love and encouragement and for being so supportive about this move to Nashville. And holy jalapeño I'm just going to miss them so much 😭💔 ...Can't say anything else cause I'll start blabbing and gushing and crying and not making sense so.... cheesy blurb over now. Look at that delicioussss food though!

Man Overboard Chapter #3 Why We’re Over

"Why We're Over" words and music by Maddy Rodriguez

I wrote Why We're Over about how heartbreaking it feels when you don't understand why that person broke your heart. When you can't figure out why it ended all of a sudden. When you're going over everything trying to find the point at which it went from being amazing, to being over. That's what I went through when I wrote this song. I had fallen for a guy that I knew had fallen for me too, but he was backing out and running away and I had no idea why. And that was what hurt the most - the not knowing.

Man Overboard. Chapter # 2. Man Overboard EP.

Album cover Man Overboard EP

I wrote Man Overboard about a guy I dated a few years ago, who I was starting to fall in love with. I knew he was falling for me too. He told me he wanted me to be his girlfriend. I was hesitant to commit at first...

But then when I said "yes I want to be with you too", he started getting cold feet!! All of a sudden, he was afraid to get into a serious relationship, even though it was HIS IDEA! ... He kept coming up with a million different excuses why he shouldn't commit. I think it was because he was afraid of falling in love. He was afraid that if he loved me, that the other things in his life would suffer - his schoolwork, his business, his friends. ...He changed his mind a few times and tried to get me back, but then when we'd talk about it, he'd get scared and give up again. He kept jumping ship, and leaving me behind, confused, and angry, and sad. And that's how I got the idea for "Man Overbaord."

Lyrics

Man Overboard

Words and music by Maddy (Madison) Rodriguez

The wind is heavy

The clouds grow dark

Another tsunami

Ripping us apart and baby

You know I love you

I don’t give up, when the storm gets bad

But you’re afraid of injuries

So you won’t love me back

You never stick it out long enough

For the storm to pass

All you know how to do

Is give up and pack your bags

Once again I’m shouting man overboard

You jump into the water, swim to the shore

Just when I am needing you the most to stay

In the middle of the storm you always run away

Shame on me for thinking that you’d stick around

You fooled me like you’ve done so many times before

Once again I’m shouting man overboard

Once again I’m shouting man overboard

You race back to me

When you figure out that you’re alone

And usually I let you

Come back onto the boat

But eventually you abandon me

You always bail when you get scared

So I won’t take you in again

You can drown for all I care

Once again I’m shouting man overboard

You jump into the water, swim to the shore

Just when I am needing you the most to stay

In the middle of the storm you always run away

Shame on me for thinking that you’d stick around

You fooled me like you’ve done so many times before

Once again I’m shouting man overboard

Once again I’m shouting man overboard

You’re so predictable

And yet I always fall for you

But I can’t do this anymore with you

We’ve just been here too many times before

Once again I’m shouting man overboard

You jump into the water, swim to the shore

Just when I am needing you the most to stay

In the middle of the storm you always run away

Shame on me for thinking that you’d stick around

You fooled me like you’ve done so many times before

Once again I’m shouting man overboard

Once again I’m shouting man overboard

Game Changer. Chapter # 1. Man Overboard EP.

Album cover Man Overboard EPAre you his Game Changer?

Game Changer is the fist song on my my Man Overboard EP. I got the idea for the song from a line that Ryan Gosling says in the movie "Crazy Stupid Love." It's the scene where he's telling Steve Carell on the phone about falling in love with Emma Stone and says "I met a girl and she's a game changer." I thought  man, that's a good title! It made me think of how I was the game changer to my boyfriend, and he became mine. I had never fallen for someone like that before. It changed my world... I made a mental note of the title and saved it for later. About a year later, I wrote the chorus and brought it to my friend Brett Truitt in Nashville (he's an awesome writer and producer and has a duo called Truitt).

We wrote the song from the perspective of convincing "that" person you're into that despite how scary falling for someone can be, you could be their Game Changer! You could be the one who changes their world. You could be the one.

Game Changer  lyrics

By Maddy Rodriguez and Brett Truitt

I heard she stole your heart and smashed it

You won’t let anybody else patch it up

I heard that now you’re just another player

You always break it off before you get hurt

Baby I can change your world

I know you’re tired Of girls that screwed you over

I ain’t like the others Baby let me prove it

Anything you want for you I can do it

Trust me I can make you love me

I know you think about me

Why you’re trying to fight it

Give it a shot

Baby won’t you try it out

I could be the game changer

I could be what you didn’t think you wanted

This might be even better than your wildest dreams

You need a little light in your darkness

Your heart is locked and baby, I’m the key

I know you’re tired

Of girls that screwed you over

I ain’t like the others

Baby let me prove it

Anything you want for you

I can do it

Trust me I can make you love me

I know you think about me

Why you’re trying to fight it

Give it a shot

Baby won’t you try it out

I could be the

Only thing that change your life

Change your heart and change your mind

Baby, you know I would treat you right

I know you’re tired

Of girls that screwed you over

I ain’t like the others

Baby let me prove it

Anything you want for you

I can do it

Trust me I can make you love me

I know you think about me

Why you’re trying to fight it

Give it a shot

Baby won’t you try it out

I could be the Game Changer

“You can drown, for all I care.” Man Overboard, the single, is out! Chapter 2 of my new EP.

Man Overboard single Art work

I am so happy and relieved. My single, Man Overboard, the title track of my new EP album is finally out. It dropped at midnight last night. It's been a long road on this project.  I wrote it a couple of years ago and it's about that old crazy thing that happens in relationships when you think he's going to change and he never does. Man Overboard is about that moment when you realize you've had enough. It's Chapter 2 of my new EP, Man Overboard, dropping May 20th. Each song is part of the story. When the EP comes out, listen to Chapter 1, the prequel song to Man Overboard. It's called Game Changer. That's when you're sure he's the one... http://bit.ly/ManOverboardSingle

Man Overboard, my New EP coming soon! Thank you to my pledgers and Pledge Music

I haven't had time to post a blog lately. As you may or may not know, I have been very busy working on new recordings and my "day job" has been scheduling me on extra shifts. In addition, I also have been spending time managing the crowdfunding campaign for the New EP. All of this work has a specific purpose though: To record new songs for me to show to my contacts in Nashville and have enough money to spend a month there pursuing my goal. Here's an excerpt from the last update to my Pledge Music campaign pledgers. If you pledged or Pre-ordered my new EP you would have gotten the full letter already.

Having some tea at the studio :)

Having some tea at the studio :)

"Since I last updated, the campaign has reached 109% of funding goal! This is awesome! After PledgeMusic fees (they need to charge something for this great crowdfunding platform), 20% of all proceeds will go to the Sick Kids Hospital Foundation in Toronto. The remaining, I will use to continue to support the music (staying in Nashville for a month is not free, of course). This Saturday, February 20, I’m flying down to Nashville for probably the 7th time. On this trip, I will have 6 new songs to show people, which YOU helped me record. These new tracks wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for your support!! I have set up meetings with some important music industry contacts (at ASCAP, NSAI, Ole, BigDeal Music and more…) and I can’t wait to show them these songs!! Even though the tracks aren’t finished yet (they’re being mixed by my producer as we speak), I think they’ll be my best recordings yet. I hope they blow people away and open new doors for me! Because I really believe I’m ready to make this making-music-thing a full time gig and a career!! And quit my waitressing job! Hahah! Making a living writing songs is my dream. But as you may know music as a business has been hurt a lot by the digital revolution. It is now harder than ever to make it in the music business. Financially it’s a real struggle to stay afloat and keep going. But I’m not giving up. Especially after all your support during this campaign…. I just want to ask you one more favor. Please send me good vibes. Whether it’s a little prayer or positive thoughts, think of me while I’m in Nashville, and wish me good luck. I think knowing that I have people in my life (family, friends, and fans) cheering me on, will give me the faith and strength to really give it my all! I wanna make you guys PROUD!!!"

My Pledge Music campaign at 78% of goal, but need to reach 100 %

Maddy Rodriguez in Campeche, Mexico

Hi There,

I hope you had an awesome Holiday Season and a fantastic New Years!!! I sure did :) I spent Christmas at home in Toronto with my parents, and my boyfriend and his fam too! And then I got to visit my Dad's side of the family in Campeche, Mexico. It was so nice seeing my cousins and aunts and uncles who all live there. I hadn't seen them in 2 years!

But now I'm back in music mode thinking about my recording coming up. I'm hoping to finish 6 songs before Feb 20th, which is when I'm going back to Nashville. 3 or 4 of the songs will be on my New EP coming out in the Spring (if all goes well and we raise 100% of the money we need to record)... The other couple of songs I will use to present to my publishing contacts in Nashville when I meet with them in Feb/March! It's gonna be a lot of work getting these new songs done, but it's my favourite kind of work! I love it!!!

As I've mentioned before, we won't actually be able to complete my New EP and the new demos, if we don't get my PledgeMusic campaign to 100% of the goal! This is because PledgeMusic won't give us ANY of the money we raised unless we reach 100%! And I cannot afford the cost to finish these recordings by myself.

...We hit 78% of the goal a few days ago, which is awesome!!! Thank you so much if you donated. But we have 2 weeks left and we still need to get to 100%. So if you haven't already, please consider pledging and pre-ordering the new EP (which is only $10 !!). It'll mean the world to me!!! There's still some great exclusives left too, which you can receive in return for you donation - such as a signed CD, or a Skype session with me, or your name in the liner notes, or if you live in the Toronto areal - a house concert!!!

I'm very excited about my new songs and I can't wait to share them with you. But I need your help to raise the rest of the money to record them! We're at 78% guys - SO CLOSE!!  Please pledge here if you can: http://www.pledgemusic.com/maddyrodriguez

Btw: All pledgers get behind the scenes access to the recording process and get to hear the songs before anyone else!

All the best to you this 2016! I hope it's the year that your dreams come true!

Love,

Maddy Xox

My song Un Poco de Ti on ABC Family’s Switched at Birth. Thank You!

I looked up the etymology of the word Thanks to see if the origins shed light on the word. Basically, the original meaning in old German and old English refers to good memories, to "thoughts of gratitude." This might not be enough to express what I feel regarding my song Un Poco de Ti (cowritten with Ryan Stewart) being placed on Switched at Birth (Season 4 Episode 15 - Instead of Damning the Darkness, It's Better to Light a Little Lantern).

Nevertheless, to everyone involved in choosing the song - Hayley Page (Nettwerk film folk), Tasha and Wendy (Wendy Levy Music), the show's producers and ABC Family : Thank You! from the bottom of my heart.

Music Ontario Songwriting Challenge

Passing the Torch in Canadian Music. Canada’s Music Incubator.

Music Ontario Songwriting Challenge

What did it mean to me to be selected for Music Ontario’s Songwriting Challenge (in partnership with the Bell Media National Songwriting Initiative and the Canadian Council of Music Industry Associations)?

Well, it meant the world!

I recently wrote about how I felt after winning the Grand Prize and Lennon Award in the John Lennon Songwriting Competiton. I wrote that it’s always a wonderful feeling to be recognized for your talent. As an artist and songwriter starting out, sometimes you question yourself as to whether you’re good enough, whether you’re going to be able to make a living with your art. There are so many obstacles and such strong competition in the music business that you really have to believe in yourself to keep going. Winning the prizes from the JLSC and being selected to take part in Music Ontario’s Songwriting challenge reinforce my belief in myself. I can do this!

At Coalition with Music Ontario songwriters

About 200 talented Ontario songwriters applied for the songwriting challenge, but there were only 5 spots available! Of course I was elated to have been chosen. To work with a songwriter and producer like Gavin Brown (Metric, Barenaked Ladies) was amazing! I am very happy with the song we came up with. I hope the song gets cut by a major artist so you can hear it on the radio in the future! You may not know how valuable a mentorship like the one provided by this opportunity means in specific terms, but I can tell you that it is expensive to book a great studio like Coalition Music to write and record. It’s expensive to produce good quality pitchable demos and it’s really, really hard to meet and collaborate with established awesome producers like Gavin. Beyond that, to know that your talent is taken seriously, that’s priceless.

I am very grateful to Music Ontario, the Bell Media National Songwriting Initiative and the Canadian Council of Music Industry Associations for this opportunity. I promise you I will continue to work very hard to make it in this business and make you proud. Best, Maddy Rodriguez
